Local snowboard cross racer Connor Schlegel makes the jump to pro team

Special to the Daily
VAIL – Local Connor Schlegel was hoping to get nominated to the U.S. Snowboard Team’s snowboardcross development team this spring.
Instead, he was surprised to learn he had skipped the development team level altogether, and was nominated directly to the pro team.
For an athlete who has only one World Cup start on his stat sheet, it is a big leap.
“I was pretty blown away,” he said.
But Schlegel says he’s excited to take on the challenge.
After growing up on the Front Range and showing talent for snowboardcross at a young age, Schlegel moved in with his grandparents in Eagle County during his teenage years and began attending the Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, where he graduated in 2020. He says snowboardcross racing is the main topic of conversation around the dinner table with his grandparents, who have become close observers of the sport. ....

Colorado COVID-19 Outbreaks Spike in Supposedly Safe Places

Among the first Coloradans to be vaccinated against COVID-19 were residents and employees of nursing homes and other senior-care centers in the state. But while these efforts initially seemed to be eliminating outbreaks at such facilities, that s clearly not the case. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has reported nearly 100 outbreaks at health-care sites in the past two weeks, with the category surpassing outbreaks at K-12 schools for the first time in months.
The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent ....

Eagle County Schools: Prom and graduation to go on (almost) as normal

Screen grab
Even with a recent influx of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines, Eagle County Schools is optimistic and planning for (almost) normal prom and graduation ceremoneies for the areas’ high schools.
This decision is aided in large part by the evolving state and county mandates. On Friday, Colorado’s coronavirus dial expires, leaving it up to local communities to decide what restrictions are right for them regarding Eagle County has said that it hopes to lift restrictions by May 27 one day before Eagle County starts hosting its graduations.
According to Katie Jarnot, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Eagle County Schools, the plans are beginning to come together for graduation. “The public health orders will allow us to have a pretty normal graduation and the capacity limits will be lifted in such a way that we will be able to allow anyone who wants to attend, to attend,” she said at Wednesday’s school board meeting. ....

New Colorado K-12 COVID Outbreaks Triple April 2021 Update

The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis.
