The Harding University Department of Theatre has announced the return of Searcy Summer Dinner Theatre, kicking off with “Harvey” June 10. 
This summer will mark the community-based theatre program’s 38th season, with the theme “Escape from Reality.” As a precaution due to COVID-19, the program will limit seating and produce two shows instead of the usual three. 
“After being forced to shutter the 2020 season due to COVID-19, the department is excited to welcome back the award-winning, community-based program for 2021,” Dr. Steve Frye, chair of the theatre department, said.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Harvey” tells the story of Elwood Dowd, who repeatedly invites his friend, Harvey, to social gatherings held by his sister, Veta. The trouble is, Harvey is an invisible, 6-foot-tall rabbit. Veta eventually decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. Mistakes are made, misunderstandings are created, and soon everyone is pulled into Elwood’s ....

Lilly to start bringing back downtown employees June 1, requiring vaccinations at first

Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co. plans to allow about 25% of its downtown employees who switched to remote working during the pandemic to return to in-person work on June 1, provided that the employees are vaccinated.
Lilly will also require masks and social-distancing while indoors.
The company plans to open its downtown locations to all employees by July 12, barring a reversal of the downward trend in COVID-19 cases.
Lilly typically has about 11,000 employees at various locations downtown, including its massive corporate headquarters on South Delaware Street. About 7,000 switched to remote working at the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Another 4,000 employees largely lab workers and maintenance staff continued to work on-site. ....

History remembered

A bronze plaque placed at 330 Alexander St. in Nevada City commemorates the homesite of Preston Alexander, who along with his family were some of the first African American settlers in Nevada City in the mid-1850s. The plaque was unveiled earlier this week.

Ten people gathered this week to unveil a plaque of one of Nevada City’s first Black settlers, Preston Alexander.
Born in Virginia, Alexander settled with his wife Louisa Alexander in 1854 in Nevada City.
Bernard Zimmerman, of the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission, said this plaque is just one opportunity to highlight the region’s historic “ethnic” communities. ....
