When I moved to Nevada City in 1977, history columns by Bob Paine drew my attention. Later, Bob Wyckoff became a regular contributor. More recently, Gage McKinney, Linda Jack, Maria Brower, Gary Noy and others have provided us with a better understanding of our past as did the late Brad Prowse, who spent years researching and assembling his 100 Years Ago column. None of us, however, could complete our research without occasional help from the Searls Historical Library, headed by Pat Chesnut. Missing from the 2021 Searls research team, however, is Wally Hagaman, whose death last December was a big loss for anyone interested in local history, and a deep personal loss for those of us who knew him. ....

Officials aren’t sure when the work at Memorial Park will be done, but they want it ready by the park’s centennial this coming Veterans Day. The Grass Valley Council on Tuesday opted for a plan that will make the clock tower the focal point of the park. Two new benches will adjoin existing benches on the front of the clock tower, with kiosk signage on both sides of the courtyard, according to a staff report. Landscaping will be at the entryway and as a backdrop to the hardscape improvements. A Community Development Block Grant of $3.5 million was obtained for this and other improvements to Memorial Park. City Manager Tim Kiser estimated the cost of work in the clock tower area to be between $40,000 and $50,000. It’s unknown when the work can be completed, but the goal is to be finished before the park’s centennial on Nov. 11. ....

The plaque was unveiled earlier this week. Photo: Elias Funez Ten people gathered this week to unveil a plaque of one of Nevada City’s first Black settlers, Preston Alexander. Born in Virginia, Alexander settled with his wife Louisa Alexander in 1854 in Nevada City. Bernard Zimmerman, of the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission, said this plaque is just one opportunity to highlight the region’s historic “ethnic” communities. ....
