The Repository In February, I made a return trip to my hometown of Massillon for the sad passing of my sister, Betty Black Gossage. While I was there, an article appeared in The Massillon Independent regarding updating the walking trail at the Rezzy. When I returned to Florida, I knew I wanted to honor my sister with some kind of memorial. She loved the walking trail. My parents met at the Rezzy in the 1930s swimming, (yes, they swam in it then), and my four siblings and I spent many days ice skating as kids. I contacted Steve Pedro, director of Parks & Recreation, who was in charge of this endeavor at the Rezzy. He gave me great suggestions, recommendations, and offered to plant the tree and the plaque when it was completed. I contacted Moyer s Nursery and Landscaping. Bruce Moyer helped me through the process, and ordered a beautiful Royal Raindrops flowering crabapple tree. Bruce said he would make sure it was the prettiest one, and he did. ....
The Independent MASSILLON – About a dozen curious seeds showed up on a cool Friday morning to give life to a tree in Community Park. Representatives from the city of Massillon, FirstEnergy electric service company and Wright Tree Service assisted with a tree-planting ceremony to honor Arbor Day. This is something we do (about) every year at a different Massillon park, said Steve Pedro, director of the city s Parks and Recreation Department. Last year s Arbor Day celebration was canceled due to the COVID-19 crisis, Pedro said. First Energy donated a small pine tree that was planed in a northwest section of the park. The Independent MASSILLON – One of the more visible and utilized sections of the city s park system is in the process of a major facelift. Resurfacing work on the Campbell Walking Path at Reservoir Park began early Friday morning, said Parks & Rec Director Steve Pedro, who called the effort preventative maintenance. The project closed much of the walking trail on Friday. Pedro added that weather will determine the path s status on Saturday. Multiple coatings of new surface material will be applied in the coming days. We ll have periodic closures, one or two days at a time, as the work continues, Pedro said, noting that the trail will receive three coats. ....
