- Like the rest of the world, the biggest news story in Ketchikan was the quarantine caused by the Corona Virus or COVID 19. Most of Ketchikan was shut down from mid-March through the end of April harkening back to the month- long closure of the Ketchikan economy and social world for a month during the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918.
By the end of the year, the COVID 19 virus had infected more than 250 residents and local visitors. One Saxman resident, Julie Wasulli, 56, was medivaced to Bellingham in November and died on December 11. ....

United Way Rental Assistance Program Provides Much-Needed Relief for Struggling Residents
An additional $1.9 million is available starting this month, with local funding from the federal CARES Act and Community Development Block Grants

DESPITE COVID-19, Ketchikan carries on


In a normal year, the big topic of conversation would have been the heavy summer rainfall or the December deluge that threatened to cause Ketchikan Lakes Dam to breach. Or it might have been the month-long visit of Phoenix the humpback whale who bubble fed just about every day for four weeks in November at the downtown Ketchikan docks.
But in Ketchikan, in 2020, the biggest news was the same as it was all over the world, the COVID-19 Pandemic and how it changed nearly every facet of our lives over the last nine months of the year.
COVID-19 arrived in March in the First City, and, by the end of the year, more than 250 residents and travelers had tested positive. One local woman, Julie Wasuli of Saxman, died from COVID-19 in December at a hospital in Bellingham, Washington. ....

Steve Ortiz Joins Cottage Health board of directors [Lompoc Record, Calif.]
Dec. 23 Steve Ortiz, president and CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County since 2017, has joined the Cottage Health volunteer board of directors.
Ortiz also served on the organization’s board of directors from 2010 to 2013, and has been a member of The Foundation Roundtable since 2017.
He currently serves as chair of the First 5 Santa Barbara County Commission, which helps children prepare for academic success.
During his tenure with United Way, Ortiz has raised over $70 million to develop and lead innovative community partnerships and programs, a Cottage spokeswoman said.
This year, he received a Hero of Hospice Philanthropy Award from Hospice of Santa Barbara in recognition of leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Santa Barbara County children in need receive holiday gifts from United Way, community donors

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Children and families across Santa Barbara County received gifts in time for the holidays this year thanks to help from United Way of SB County (UWSBC) and community donors.
United Way partnered with Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and Harding Elementary School to identify children whose families needed a little extra help putting presents under the tree this year.
Each child submitted a special wish list to United Way to share with participating donors from United Way s Young Leaders Society, The Zia Group, L3 Harris and Northern Trust. ....
