Lompoc students awarded for knowing their American history [Lompoc Record, Calif.] Jan. 5 During December, Daughters of the American Revolution Rancho Purisima chapter honored four local elementary students for award-winning essays on The Boston Massacre, a historic event considered pivotal on the path to the American Revolution. The topic was chosen for students as the 250th anniversary of the event was marked on March 5, 2020. Sonja Swartz, DAR chapter committee chair, presented awards to four local winners: Miguelito Elementary School’sJose Casillas, sixth grade, and La Purisima Concepcion Catholic School’sZario Vineyard, fifth grade; Gabriela Huizar, seventh grade; and Cameron Baker, eighth grade. ....
Steve Ortiz Joins Cottage Health board of directors [Lompoc Record, Calif.] Dec. 23 Steve Ortiz, president and CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County since 2017, has joined the Cottage Health volunteer board of directors. Ortiz also served on the organization’s board of directors from 2010 to 2013, and has been a member of The Foundation Roundtable since 2017. He currently serves as chair of the First 5 Santa Barbara County Commission, which helps children prepare for academic success. During his tenure with United Way, Ortiz has raised over $70 million to develop and lead innovative community partnerships and programs, a Cottage spokeswoman said. This year, he received a Hero of Hospice Philanthropy Award from Hospice of Santa Barbara in recognition of leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
Over 125 new bikes were distributed to local children in need this holiday season, marking the conclusion of the 14th annual Brice Fabing Memorial Bikes 4 Kids drive. The drive is held each year at Christmastime to honor the memory of Brice Fabing, a former Lompoc High School student-athlete who died in 2005 at the age of 17. We are happy to say that even through this pandemic, it was a huge success . and we were extremely touched to have been able to collect over 125 bikes this year, said Dorine Fabing, who issued a statement on behalf of the Fabing family. We are extremely proud that we were able to give back to our community in a small but rewarding way and remember Brice on this 15th year anniversary of his passing. ....
Lompoc Fire Department welcomes new recruits [Lompoc Record, Calif.] Dec. 22 Three new firefighters have joined the Lompoc Fire Department after an open recruitment and testing process, according to interim Fire Chief Brian Federmann. The recruits Nicholas Wimmel, Shane Greene and Richard West were selected to join the firefighting team after successfully completing a seven-week new hire academy. They will now move to their assigned shifts. The recent recruitments will prove beneficial to both the department and community as the department works to fill a number of recent vacancies, according to Federmann. “Working through the hiring and academy process during a pandemic is very challenging, and I would like to share my gratitude and appreciation to the men and women of our department who helped make this possible while being diligent in our safety measures,” Federmann said. ....
