A team of Carnegie Mellon University researchers led by Turner Cotterman, an engineering and public policy (EPP) Ph.D. student, has shown that sustainably decarbonizing our energy system by 2050 will require us to change the way we model energy transitions and account for the role of public opinion. Advised by Mitchell Small, professor of engineering and public policy and civil and environmental engineering, Cotterman and co-authors use nuclear energy as a case study of how conventional energy models which minimize system costs fail at accounting for social acceptance, a factor that can inhibit the deployment of certain technologies, like nuclear energy. ....

Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge was magical in so many respects. From the traditional 6 a.m. wakeup call, which for the first time included fireworks, Indianapolis Motor Speedway had one of its best days, with fans arriving on Memorial Day weekend for the first time in two years and the weather nearly idyllic.
The 105th Running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” did its part, too. The 33 drivers executed a flawless start, settling some four-wide disputes before the first turn. The fastest “500” on record – 190.690 mph was safe, had only two incidents and saw a thrilling late-race shootout between a legend and two youngsters. ....

Helio Castroneves wins the 105th running of the Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS – The drought is no longer, and Spiderman lives on.
To cap a chaotic, pass-happy Indianapolis 500 Sunday afternoon, Helio Castroneves gave the 135,000 race fans a gift to make up for their absence at the Greatest Spectacle in Racing a year ago. The longtime Team Penske driver, who won this race in 2000, 2001 and 2009, delivered his new team Meyer Shank Racing its first-ever victory by holding off Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou on the final lap to secure his fourth Indy 500 victory.
The win puts Castroneves in one of IndyCar racing’s most illustrious clubs – the now four drivers who have won the Indy 500 in the race’s 105-year history, joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears. ....

INDIANAPOLIS One minute, Graham Rahal was a serious Indianapolis 500 contender. The next, he was hitting his helmet in disbelief.
And just that quickly, the 32-year-old American’s chance ended.
Rahal entered the pits with the lead as Lap 119 approached, but when he returned to the oval, a loose left rear tire fell off. The pit-row miscue sent the No. 15 Honda spinning hard into the second turn wall as the tire bounced into the front of Conor Daly’s oncoming car. ....
