Justice Department sues Vermont medical centre over abortion

The U.S. Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit Wednesday against the University of Vermont Medical Center alleging it forces staff members who object to abortion on religious grounds to participate in abortion procedures.
The Vermont lawsuit alleges the Burlington hospital violated the Church Amendment, which prevents hospitals from discriminating against health care workers who refuse to perform or assist with abortions.
“No institution or person should force any health care provider to perform an abortion if doing so would violate the provider’s religious beliefs or moral convictions,” Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband, of the Civil Rights Division, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. “This kind of indecent coercion violates everything this country stands for.� ....

Hospital reaffirms the compliance of its employee medical procedure opt-out policies in letter to US Department of Health and Human Services
University of Vermont Medical Center The University of Vermont Medical Center sent a letter today to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) reaffirming its compliance with federal laws that provide hospital employees the ability to reasonably opt-out of participating in medical procedures they oppose on religious or personal beliefs, which include reproductive care, sterilizations, blood transfusions, and others. 
The letter is in response to December 11 and December 14 correspondence from HHS threatening the hospital with federal enforcement stemming from an August 2019 “Notice of Violation” OCR issued to UVM Medical Center and the press, despite lacking any legal authority to do so.  ....

Vermont Hospital Cyber Attack Cost Estimated at $1.5M a Day

A late October cyber attack on the computer systems of the University of Vermont Medical Center is costing the hospital about $1.5 million a day in lost revenue and recovery costs, its CEO said.
The Oct. 28 attack crippled the computer systems of the hospital system that serves much of Vermont and parts of upstate New York.
Hospital CEO Dr. Stephen Leffler estimated on a call with reporters on Tuesday that they are about 70% recovered from the attack.
Leffler says they’re still trying to pinpoint the exact root of the cyber attack, but they hope to provide more details about the investigation next week, including whether it was a ransomware attack similar to what other hospitals around the country experienced. ....
