Ransomware Attack Costs Health Network $1.5m a Day - Infosecurity Magazine


A cyber-attack on a Vermont healthcare provider has delayed the rollout of an electronic health record (EHR) system and cost millions of dollars in lost revenue. 
The University of Vermont Health Network, which is based in Burlington, was hit by ransomware in October 2020, and is yet to make a full recovery. Most computer systems have been brought back online; however, some applications are still down, causing delays in various departments, including radiology.
The network serves much of Vermont and parts of upstate New York. When attackers struck at six of the network s hospitals, Vermont s governor, Phil Scott, deemed the situation serious enough to merit the deployment of the Vermont Army National Guard’s Combined Cyber Response Team 1 to aid in the recovery effort. ....

UK coronavirus variant likely already in this state, doctor warns

The U.K. coronavirus variant is likely already in Vermont, warned the president of the University of Vermont Medical Center this week. 
The variant, identified as B.1.1.7, was first discovered in the U.K. several weeks ago but has since appeared in several U.S. states, including Colorado, where it was first identified in the country, as well as New York, California, Florida, Georgia, and, as recently as Thursday, in Pennslyvania.
The strain is thought to be more transmissible than COVID-19. At this time, experts appear confident that existing coronavirus vaccines will work against the variant.  ....

Vermont Business Magazine As Vermont enters the fourth week of administering COVID-19 vaccinations, the University of Vermont Medical Center continues to follow the federal government and State of Vermont plan to vaccinate health care workers identified for the first phase. The plan first called for Vermont hospitals to prioritize their providers and staff, EMS and Home Health & Hospice.
According to the plan, this week marks an even greater shift to community-based providers, those not employed by hospitals. UVM Medical Center is not distributing the vaccine to employees who are fully remote or who work in buildings that patients do not enter. ....

The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccines created by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna are officially in Vermont, and thousands have already been inoculated against the virus. 
On Dec. 15, the first Vermonter to get vaccinated was an emergency department nurse at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Since then, the first wave of vaccination efforts have focused on health care workers and residents and employees of long-term care facilities.
