Oil opponents: BPC EIA 'contradicts' drilling halt

Gov t official says no new drill ship approval needed
Brands case misconceived and backs consultation

Oil exploration opponents are arguing Bahamas Petroleum Company s (BPC) assertion that a mid-drilling halt will cause unnecessary safety risks is contradicted by its own environmental studies.
Environmental activists have seized on the emergency response section of BPC s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which says drilling can be halted within one to three days should a hurricane threaten, to challenge the company s assertion that a Supreme Court-ordered halt to exploratory drilling would be impossible to implement.
While BPC intends to drill outside of hurricane season to avoid potential disruption from hurricanes, the ERP (emergency response plan) will contain hurricane preparedness and response, the relevant section of the EIA stated. ....

Gov't joins BPC in opposing oil Judicial Review

[email protected]
Environmental activists yesterday accused the Government of jumping the gun after it filed legal papers opposing their bid to halt oil exploration in Bahamian waters.
Rashema Ingraham, executive director of Waterkeeper Bahamas, told Tribune Business it goes against normal legal process for Judicial Reviews for the Attorney General s Office to file a notice of objection prior to Justice Hanna-Weekes determining whether the activists case should proceed.
The Supreme Court is due to make that decision at 11am today, but in its December 22, 2020, notice , the Attorney General s Office revealed its intention to seek judicial permission to oppose the Judicial Review challenge on three counts. ....

BPC faces $400k extra daily costs if drilling halted

[email protected]
Bahamas Petroleum Company s (BPC) chief executive is alleging it will incur extra costs of up to $400,000 per day if activists succeed in persuading the Supreme Court to halt its exploratory oil drilling.
Simon Potter, in a December 11, 2020, affidavit filed with the Supreme Court, said this would be incurred if the Stena IceMAX was forced to suspend drilling operations and sit in a holding pattern above the Perseverance One well in waters some 90 miles to the west of Andros.
The cost of simply extending the Stena agreement and holding the vessel in readiness is estimated to be in the range of $350,000 to $400,000 per day, Mr Potter alleged. Any interruption to the drilling execution schedule, no matter how small, adds considerable cost to the operation which can be measured on a daily basis. ....

Government must ban oil drilling

EDITOR, The Tribune.
Is the Bahamas Government going to risk destroying The Bahamas $8bn per year tourism and fisheries sector ($80bn over ten years) for Simon Potters’ promise of $5bn in oil revenue that is based on a speculative oil well and a confidential oil deal with the Bahamas Government?
Is The Bahamas Government going to risk paying billions of dollars in civil and criminal charges to the US Government (US Clean Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, etc.) to clean up Florida beaches if there is an oil spill on the scale of the Ixtoc 1 or Deepwater Horizon (BP paid $20.8bn to settle with the US Government) oil spills that devastated the economy and environment in Mexico and the US Gulf Coast? ....
