Court to consider oil submissions today

LAWYERS representing environmental activists, the government and Bahamas Petroleum Company tussled over applications seeking judicial review of BPC’s exploratory oil drilling during a Supreme Court hearing yesterday.
Justice Petra Hanna-Weekes said she will consider their submissions today and return a judgment as soon as possible.
BPC’s drilling of Perseverance #1 began on Sunday, December 20, about 90 miles west of Andros and is expected to be completed within 45 to 60 days.
Yesterday’s hearing considered environmentalists’ application for leave for judicial review, their motion seeking to amend that application to add the Town Planning Committee as a party to the proceedings and their application seeking a stay of drilling activities pending the judicial review. ....

Activists not giving up on court hopes

ACTIVISTS are holding out hope that oil drilling can be halted as the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments today over a renewed application for judicial review regarding the government’s recent decisions to give Bahamas Petroleum Company environmental authorisation for its exploratory oil well.
Drilling of this well has continued unimpeded for the past week.
Activists told The Tribune yesterday they continue to remain hopeful that BPC’s drilling can be stopped, despite an attorney for the company, Clare Montgomery, QC, just several days ago telling the Supreme Court this was virtually impossible to do. ....

Gov't joins BPC in opposing oil Judicial Review

Environmental activists yesterday accused the Government of jumping the gun after it filed legal papers opposing their bid to halt oil exploration in Bahamian waters.
Rashema Ingraham, executive director of Waterkeeper Bahamas, told Tribune Business it goes against normal legal process for Judicial Reviews for the Attorney General s Office to file a notice of objection prior to Justice Hanna-Weekes determining whether the activists case should proceed.
The Supreme Court is due to make that decision at 11am today, but in its December 22, 2020, notice , the Attorney General s Office revealed its intention to seek judicial permission to oppose the Judicial Review challenge on three counts. ....
