National Night Out brings police and community together

STURBRIDGE The best part of National Night Out is that it allows residents to meet public safety personnel in a fun environment, Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert said.
The event, held Tuesday evening on the town common, brought out police, firefighters, DPW workers, emergency medical technicians, the community emergency response team, elected officials and many local businesses.
It s a great way to bring the neighborhood together, Dessert said. It s a great way for people to get to know the first responders and for us to get to know the community and build relationships.
The event was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and lead emergency dispatcher Barbara Boiteau, who plans the event with Lt. Larry Bateman, jumped right in when she got the green light in June to begin planning this year s event. ....

Man charged with stabbing woman in Shrewsbury with glass tube

Police tracked down and arrested a Worcester man at a Sturbridge hotel Friday suspected of stabbing a woman in the neck Wednesday in Shrewsbury with a broken glass tube.
The suspect, identified as Carlos Gonzalez, 51, was charged with assault and battery on a family member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and strangulation.
Gonzalez was also arrested on two previously existing warrants.
The arrest was made through a joint effort by Shrewsbury police detectives, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Sturbridge Police Department.
About 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to Extra Storage Space, 53 Clinton St. in Shrewsbury, after receiving a 911 call regarding a woman being stabbed in the neck. ....

Town of Sturbridge names Earl Dessert police chief

Earl Dessert will take on the role of Sturbridge Police Department chief starting Monday after a year heading the Wales Police Department.
Dessert, who has more than 22 years of experience in law enforcement, had served as the chief in Wales, a part-time role, since October 2019 while maintaining his job as lieutenant in the Sturbridge Police Department.
In a statement on Facebook, Dessert said the full-time job in Sturbridge will not allow him the time to continue serving in Wales.
“Although my tenure has been short and a pandemic struck soon after my appointment, the department still made great strides with building community relations, upgrading equipment, hiring experienced officers and seeking grant funding,” Dessert said. ....
