Gone, goose: LaSalle borough officials turn to man's best friend to clear out pesky, pooping birds

MONTREAL
In LaSalle’s Parc des Rapides, Canada Geese waddle down a paved path alongside joggers. The waterfront park runs alongside the St-Lawrence River and a bird sanctuary.
While more often than not, the birds and humans get along, the borough wants to clear the geese out.
“Canada Geese unfortunately produce a large number of feces and it really is a toxic hazard,” said Nathalie Hadida from LaSalle’s Registry and Citizen Relations department.
The borough is paying a contractor $50 000 a year to use herding dogs and remote controlled toys to scare the geese away.
Jean-Simon Duchesne is one of the wildlife technicians. He and his dog, a 10-year-old border collie named Lili, patrol up and down the park chasing the birds. ....

Ogdensburg port expansion work will begin this year

Apr 13, 2021 A delayed project to deepen and widen the port in Ogdensburg has finally gotten the needed funding to begin this year.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer announced that the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority will receive $6.9 million from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Transportation.
The first phase will consist of dredging the St. Lawrence riverbed so bigger Seaway ships can dock. The second phase of the work will add 500 feet to the port’s west dock wall to create another vessel berth and build additional cargo storage. ....

Man, 46, dies after falling from roof next to apartment

ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y. (AP) A man died Friday after falling off of the roof of a two-story building in upstate New York, state police said.
Daniel Langill, 46, may have suffered a medical episode or lost his balance while on a roof adjacent to his Alexandria Bay apartment, state police said.
He fell around 5:45 p.m. and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Alexandria Bay, a village with around 1,000 residents, is on the St. Lawrence River. It’s located about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Syracuse. ....
