Former city councillor, federal minister Amarjeet Sohi enters Edmonton mayor's race

A former federal cabinet minister and Edmonton city councillor, Amarjeet Sohi has thrown his hat in the ring to run for the open mayor’s chair in October’s municipal election.
Sohi launched his campaign on a Facebook livestream Monday morning. The well-known politician was elected to city council for three terms starting in 2007 as the Ward 12 councillor, but left the post early in his final term to run for the Edmonton Mill Woods federal seat in the 2015 election.

Edmonton adopts strategy to manage homeless camps

This year, teams of peace officers, police and housing and social agency workers will aim to close camps within a week or two if they re deemed high risk.
Smyth said high risk level would include areas near playgrounds and schools, near buildings or in areas where there s a significant risk of fire.
High-risk encampments can threaten the safety of individuals and the surrounding community and can in some situations include criminal activity and violence, Smyth said.
Camps deemed to be low risk to occupants, the public and the surrounding environment, would get a housing focused response, with outreach workers trying to help people find places to stay. ....

Edmonton plans for new approach to homeless encampments

EDMONTON
The City of Edmonton is updating how it responds to encampments with a focus on providing housing and support to those in need while discouraging the continued presence of homeless camps.
They will move to close down those camps in as short order as we possibly can, said Rob Smyth with the city.
The city s plan calls for staff to house individuals before a camp is taken down.
“Our shared priority is the safety of both people experiencing homelessness and the surrounding community,” said Smyth.
“Encampments are a symptom of a larger problem and the permanent solution to homelessness is safe, adequate and affordable housing with support.” ....

Edmonton approves funding to support daytime services for the homeless

Edmonton city council has agreed to provide additional funding to support daytime services for the homeless but stopped short of creating a new temporary drop-in shelter along 105 Street.
During Monday’s executive committee meeting, council agreed to provide up to $2.4 million to the Bissell Centre and up to $564,704 to the Boyle Street Community Centre to address gaps in the services, which include offering meals, assistance finding housing and mental health supports.
