Anti-corruption probe clears Edmonton police after detective alleged 'close-knit' ties between landlord, EPS brass

Behiels wrote in his Jan. 24, 2021, memo to police Chief Dale McFee that some rank-and-file officers had come to believe that Shah had “close knit relationships with senior EPS executive officers.” The purpose of the memo, Behiels wrote, was to inform McFee that he had breached service protocol by leaking investigative materials to the press. Behiels did not provide a copy of the memo to Postmedia.
“Certainly rising above the threshold of suspicion, I believe that members of the Edmonton Police Service have engaged in corrupt acts that have effectively insulated this criminal organization from investigation and prosecution,” he wrote. ....

'Not a friendly person': appeal court upholds Edmonton police officer's firing over harassment, lying

A former Edmonton police employee who was the victim of an officer’s workplace harassment campaign is relieved after Alberta’s highest court upheld the former constable’s firing.
In a decision released Monday, the Alberta Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal from Fiona Moffat, a ex-Edmonton Police Service constable who was fired following an investigation into bullying and harassment in the department’s emergency communications unit.

Edmonton plans for new approach to homeless encampments


 
EDMONTON
The City of Edmonton is updating how it responds to encampments with a focus on providing housing and support to those in need while discouraging the continued presence of homeless camps. 
They will move to close down those camps in as short order as we possibly can, said Rob Smyth with the city.
The city s plan calls for staff to house individuals before a camp is taken down.
“Our shared priority is the safety of both people experiencing homelessness and the surrounding community,” said Smyth.
“Encampments are a symptom of a larger problem and the permanent solution to homelessness is safe, adequate and affordable housing with support.”  ....

'We are not at all reluctant to enforce': City officials respond to enforcement questions

Many fines for people defying the city s mask bylaw and public health rules are being laid after the fact, according to city administrators.
It comes in response to questions by the mayor and councillors at Wednesday s Emergency Advisory Committee meeting on the level of enforcement happening in Edmonton.
Rallies of anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers and alt-right hate groups continuing to gather, and having many festivals of their own, is really starting to vex Edmontonians including myself, said Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson.
I am hearing more and more frustration from Edmontonians about the enforcement approach.
City administrators said city police and bylaw officers don t have jurisdiction on the legislature grounds, where weekly anti-mask and COVID-19 restriction rallies are held, but acknowledged they could lay fines when they march elsewhere in the city. ....
