Kodiak Island Borough assembly members continued to wrestle with the draft fiscal year 2022 budget at a special work session Tuesday. The work session, requested by Borough Mayor Bill Roberts, examined two proposed alternatives to the borough managerâs draft budget and its amended cut. Both alternatives were drafted by two groups of assembly members â one by Duane Dvorak and Geoff Smith, and the other by James Turner, Scott Arndt and Aimee Williams. The two budget amendments propose to preserve nonprofit funding requested by the assembly on May 20 while avoiding drastic cuts that the managerâs revised draft made to the community development department. ....
The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has OKâd a $2.3 million project to fix a retaining wall leased to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center. The project, which was originally projected to cost $1.2 million, aims to upgrade the wall, which is located next to the hospital parking lot and has started crumbling as the result of prolonged exposure to Kodiakâs weather. Architects who surveyed the damage said âsoftball-sized debrisâ had fallen from the wall. Last year, the architecture company hired to conduct the design of the project said the wall would become structurally unsound within two to five years if no repairs were made. ....
