We re going to cut the ribbon on - for us - what s a really historic and important day - we ve been making a number of investments in the Charter Street Cemetery, trying to make sure that we re being good stewards of that historic space, the mayor, the Pickman House s wooden front door to her back, told the day’s crowd. “And through a renewed partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum, we re going to be able to have this building where we can welcome people who are visiting the cemetery, the [Salem Witch Trials] Tercentenary Memorial, or frankly, the city at all, but primarily geared towards these spaces. ....

Testing of soil samples from a wooded area with walking trails adjacent to the upper soccer fields at McGrath Park in Salem has been found to have elevated lead levels. The samples were collected at shallow depths of 0’ to 1’ from the surface. The levels detected in the shallow soils and the use of the site as part of the park triggered immediate notification requirements to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). ....
May 10, 2021 The Salem Waterworth Memorial North ball field was officially named Paul Headland Field Saturday during a well-attended dedication held by the Salem Parks and Recreation Dept. Shown from left, daughter Stephanie Linder, wife Carol Sue and son Dan Headland. The late coach-teacher-minister was a successful coach of the Salem High School softball program, guiding the Quakers to a regional berth in 1997. He was a standout coach of youth girls leagues in Salem and played for decades in the local men’s leagues. In 2011 he was honored with the Spirit of Salem award from the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He was well known as an inspiration for youth of all ages. He passed away in 2017.(Salem News photos by J.D. Creer) ....
[email protected] LISBON Improvements to two early county cemeteries, a pollinator garden and a lighted fountain were approved projects receiving grant funding through the county’s land bank. The Columbiana County Land Reutilization Corp. board this week chose three of the seven projects throughout the county that applied to receive the first round of beautification grants. Although the land bank had planned to approve a grant up to $5,000, in the end the board determined all three of the final projects were worthy investments in the community. The three projects total $11,450. The first project, presented to the board by Center Township Trustee Rex Underwood, was improvements to two historic cemeteries Gaskill Cemetery on Mattix Road and Lee Cemetery on Lisbon-Millport Road just outside of Scenic Vista Park. ....
