Last summer, the idea of schoolchildren having to wear face masks in their classrooms still seemed fairly far-fetched. “That’s clearly nonsensical,” said Boris Johnson on Aug 26, a week before the start of the autumn term, when asked about the issue. “You can’t teach with face coverings and you can’t expect people to learn with face coverings.” 
Now, the ridiculous has become reality. In October, the Scottish government told schools in hotspot areas to consider masks in the classroom. Then, in January, the Northern Irish government followed suit. And on Monday, in the Government’s new roadmap out of lockdown, secondary schools in England were told that pupils should wear face coverings “for a limite ....

But almost a year after restrictions were first imposed, our consumption has risen sharply: a new YouGov poll for Public Health England found that by last month, 5.7 per cent of adults were drinking more than 50 units of alcohol a week (equivalent to five bottles of wine), compared to an estimated 3.4 per cent the year prior. 
The biggest jump was among those aged 55-64, which has left experts warning that for midlifers, at-home lockdown drinking could be more harmful than a night out. ....
