For an effective NARCL
Apropos ‘For a good ‘bad bank’ (May 19), an NARCL funded jointly by the government and Indian banks would take away the independence and objectivity of the former in the selection of the assets to be acquired. A privately funded company, on the other hand, would only take over the easily liquidable NPAs, leaving many PSBs still saddled with huge bad loans.
In the circumstances, the proposed setting up of an entity that would take over the stressed assets of banks, by funding them 15 per cent of the value and providing security receipts for the balance, fully guaranteed by the government, seems to be a feasible solution, provided the existing recovery mechanisms like the IBC are made more effective. ....

First instalment of COVID-19 relief assistance distributed

Finance Minister P.T.R.P. Thiagarajan and Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy inaugurated distribution of the first instalment of COVID-19 relief assistance of ₹2,000 for rice ration card holders here on Saturday.
Mr. Moorthy said 8.90 lakh card holders in Madurai district would receive the first instalment of the financial assistance. He distributed the assistance to a few beneficiaries at Chettikulam of Madurai East Assembly constituency and Alanganallur of Sholavandan constituency. He said that the public can contact the War Room functioning on the Collectorate premises for COVID-19-related grievances. The Finance Minister distributed financial assistance on North Masi Street. ....

Vaccine inequity
The world has now vaccines in its arsenal to keep the Covid-19 pandemic under control, but the grim reality staring it is vaccine inequity. While the rich and developed world have piled up vaccines, poor countries have been mostly left to fend for themselves . Their persistent struggle to vaccinate its citizens owing to non-availability of vaccines is glaring.
Following the justifiable pitch for waiver of Intellectual Property ( IP) protection for vaccines against Covid-19 from countries like India and South Africa, US President Joe Biden lent his country s support for IP waiver. No doubt, it is a momentous development in humanity s fight against the virus. The waiver of IP will not only enable the manufacturing of vaccines in bulk but also end the market monopoly of pharma majors and bring down prices. It is time international community stood united on IP waiver of Covid-19 vaccines. ....

Demand for gold
Apropos ‘Should India pile its reserves with gold?’ (May 6), leading economies are neutral to gold avarice and poorer ones do not possess the luxury. It is the middling economies that gravitate to gold in painful memory of earlier economic inadequacies.
Gold is at its best when interest rates fall below the rate of inflation as monetary largesse and stimulus programmes threaten inflation spikes and thus investors stick to gold. The DMK has significantly increased its voter base in Madurai district by winning five out of the 10 Assembly constituencies in the district.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the AIADMK won eight of the 10 constituencies. After the Tirupparankundram by-elections in 2019, the DMK’s tally increased to three constituencies in the district. The results declared on Sunday had shown that the DMK has changed the perception that Madurai district is an AIADMK stronghold. ....
