Two DMK MLAs from Madurai have been chosen to be Ministers of the new government that will take charge on Friday. Madurai Central Assembly constituency MLA P. T.R.P. Thiagarajan has been chosen as Minister for Finance and Human Resource Management and Madurai East MLA P. Moorthy has been chosen as Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration.
Mr. Thiagarajan has been elected from Madurai Central constituency for the second consecutive time. He defeated AIADMK alliance candidate N. Jothi Muthuramalingam by 33,915 votes.
Mr. Thiagarajan did his MBA in financial management at MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, the U.S.A. He has worked in senior managerial positions in Standard Chartered Bank and Lehman Brothers Holding Inc. He quit his corporate job and won the 2016 Assembly elections from Madurai Central constituency.

The DMK has significantly increased its voter base in Madurai district by winning five out of the 10 Assembly constituencies in the district.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the AIADMK won eight of the 10 constituencies. After the Tirupparankundram by-elections in 2019, the DMK’s tally increased to three constituencies in the district. The results declared on Sunday had shown that the DMK has changed the perception that Madurai district is an AIADMK stronghold.

Madurai Central Assembly constituency houses the famed Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple the landmark around which Madurai evolved. However, for the residents of this constituency, which forms the core city, problems are aplenty.
The inconvenience endured by the public in the name of developmental projects, traffic congestion, and lack of basic civic infrastructure are some of the major grievances highlighted by the residents.
Madurai Central assembly constituency has a set of diverse voters belonging to different communities and economic groups.
For instance, the constituency has affluent voters of S.S. Colony as well as the working class voters from areas like Thathaneri and Aruldosspuram. There are also habitations of Scheduled Caste voters from Melavasal, Subramaniapuram and Simmakkal.
