They re beautiful birds, said Mark LaBarr, conservation manager for Audubon Vermont. They can be a rare thing to see in Vermont, but when they do show up, sometimes they show up in numbers.
The mostly white owls live above the Arctic Circle, LaBarr said, but sometimes head south in the winter in search of food. They eat small rodents, using their dish-shaped faces to focus their hearing and sight, able to rotate their head nearly 360 degrees to detect the slightest movement of mice and voles, even under the snow. ....

An anniversary and an addition

In 1895, a group of 50 families and 17 hired stone masons built a Catholic church in Shelburne.
The groundbreaking was Aug. 19, 1895. Just four months later the first mass was held in the new church on Dec. 19.
After more than a century â 125 years to be exact â the church has built the first expansion of the original building, adding both a gathering room and a parish hall.
This was a $2.1 million building project that was completed toward the end of 2020, but with social distancing and other COVID restrictions, thereâs been no big celebration, said Ann Cousins, who works on special projects at the church and is on the capital campaign committee. ....

Cape Cod Stuffed Quahog Company in Monument Beach wins award for the best stuffie in New England

It’s not surprising to find a rich, buttery, stuffed quahog studded with spicy sausage on Yankee Magazine s 2020 Yankee Food Awards list of New England’s best and most iconic foods.
But the magazine’s senior food editor Amy Traverso was a little surprised that this year’s winning “stuffie” is from Massachusetts.
“For stuffies, I assumed the winner would come from Rhode Island,” she said. “But Massachusetts is the big winner this year with six out of the 10 winners.”
The other four winners are from Maine, Connecticut and Vermont.
The stellar stuffie is the Cape’s contribution, made by Brian and Gina Robinson at the Cape Cod Stuffed Quahog Company in Monument Beach, a village in the town of Bourne on Cape Cod. ....
