Sighting of snowy owl at Shelburne Farms enhances winter beauty

"They're beautiful birds," said Mark LaBarr, conservation manager for Audubon Vermont. "They can be a rare thing to see in Vermont, but when they do show up, sometimes they show up in numbers."
The mostly white owls live above the Arctic Circle, LaBarr said, but sometimes head south in the winter in search of food. They eat small rodents, using their dish-shaped faces to focus their hearing and sight, able to rotate their head nearly 360 degrees to detect the slightest movement of mice and voles, even under the snow.
