'Virtual' Relay for Life fundraising kicks off

THREE months of fundraising for Cancer Research UK has begun to replace the biennial Shetland Relay for Life, which has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
All relay teams are asked to do what they can to get the cash rolling in, with a prize on offer for the team which raises the most money by the end of July.

The committee is also keen to ensure that key elements of the Relay go ahead on Saturday 29 May, and it said the survivorsâ event is an âimportant celebrationâ.

Marathon-running Martin thanks public for raising £14,500

THE CHAIRMAN of Relay for Life Shetland has paid thanks to everyone who contributed towards a remarkable fundraising total of Â£14,500 in support of his marathon for Cancer Research UK.
When Martin Henderson set out from just north of Voxter House on a cold, snowy morning at the end of January, he never expected the generosity of the Shetland public to help him raise so much money.

While the marathon was very much a personal challenge it also an opportunity to kickstart Relay for Life Shetlandâs fundraising for 2021.
Accompanied by running partner Fiona Shearer, his route south took him past some of Shetlandâs most iconic scenery â culminating in Lerwick yards from his house where he was welcomed by a beer and the warm applause of his friends and family. ....

Relay for Life 'tea in a box' takes islanders' fancy

THE âafternoon tea in a boxâ offering from Shetlandâs Relay for Life committee has been a resounding success having raised nearly Â£5,000 in the past three weeks.
Some 3,276 fancies, sandwiches and dainties were produced, boxed and delivered with Malteser tray bakes, salt beef bannocks and bacon quiche proving most popular among islanders.

Boxes were taken as fare and wide as Dunrossness, Unst and Whalsay. Committee member Olive Macleod said: âItâs been great to see such a great response from Shetlanders and my thanks goes to everyone who baked and boxed.â
The committee are taking a week off to restock their larders but the home delivery boxes will be back for Motherâs Day weekend. Orders open on the Shetland Relay for Life Facebook page on Sunday 7 March and deliveries will be made the following Saturday (13 March). ....

'Afternoon tea in a box' to be offered by Relay for Life team

AFTERNOON tea in a box will soon be on offer through the Shetland Relay for Life committee to raise money for charity.
From mid February onwards peopleÂ can choose eight items from fancies, dainties, traybakes and sandwiches to recreate their own afternoon tea.
It will cost Â£12, with the money raised going to Cancer Research UK.

Starting on Saturday 13 February the Relay for Life team will be baking, boxing and delivering tasty treats.
Olive MacLeod from the Relay for Life Shetland committee said: âOne of the great things about Shetland is the fantastic afternoon teas that local halls host. ....
