Umrigar, PhD, a professor in the Department of English at Case Western Reserve, grew up in India and came to the United States in her early 20s. The new books offer a joyful counterweight for children during what Umrigar calls an age of dehumanizing immigrants. Binny’s Diwali (Scholastic Press) highlights Diwali, one of the biggest festivals on earth, said Umrigar, as Binny describes to classmates the fireworks, sweets and revels of the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. The illustrations are by Nidhi Chanani.

Some 3,276 fancies, sandwiches and dainties were produced, boxed and delivered with Malteser tray bakes, salt beef bannocks and bacon quiche proving most popular among islanders. 9 of 14Adverts Boxes were taken as fare and wide as Dunrossness, Unst and Whalsay. Committee member Olive Macleod said: “It’s been great to see such a great response from Shetlanders and my thanks goes to everyone who baked and boxed.” The committee are taking a week off to restock their larders but the home delivery boxes will be back for Mother’s Day weekend. Orders open on the Shetland Relay for Life Facebook page on Sunday 7 March and deliveries will be made the following Saturday (13 March).
