A campaign to see everyone in the UK with a disability vaccinated as a priority is being backed by Carlisle Mencap and its national parent charity. The call from Mencap has been prompted by the information that people with a learning disability are more than six times as likely to die of Covid-19 as the general population. Many though are not in any of the top priority Covid-19 vaccination groups. More than 5,000 people have already emailed their MP about the need to vaccinate disabled people as a priority and the Government is beginning to take notice but Carlisle Mencap is urging the public to join the cause. ....

‘Hero’: Tributes have been paid to Val Hind, from Upperby Tributes have been paid to a woman who was well-known in Carlisle for volunteering for people with learning difficulties. Val Hind, from Upperby, sadly passed away on Friday after a short battle with coronavirus which saw her hospitalised on Christmas Day. Sheila Gregory, CEO of Mencap, has known Val for more than 20 years and paid tribute to the lady that was one of a kind. “She was a very formidable lady, like a lot of carers of people with learning difficulties have to be,” explained Sheila. “She was a lady that just wanted to help people.” ....
