PLANS to make Shipley town centre less car-centric have been labelled as ludicrous and anti-motorist by local MP Philip Davies. Revealed by Bradford Council on Monday, the plans will see a stretch of Kirkgate between the indoor and outdoor markets become a bus gate that would be closed to all cars except taxis. The plans have so far received a mixed response, and Mr Davies claims the scheme would decimate the local economy. The Council has defended the plans, saying they were modest changes that would improve the town centre. A consultation on the plans began on Monday and will last until May 12. ....
A number of on street parking bays would be moved. The work is being funded through a mix of active travel funding, to boost walking and cycling, and the Government’s Towns Fund - a pot of cash awarded to towns across the country in need of regeneration. Shipley could eventually see projects worth £25m funded through the scheme. The Council has said: “This would help to reduce traffic along this route, reducing noise and air pollution, and improving bus journey times. “Reducing the volume of vehicles in the Kirkgate area will also help to provide a safer, cleaner and more vibrant environment for everyone to enjoy.” ....

AN international photography competition is launching in Saltaire to mark a special anniversary. Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to enter the event, being run by Saltaire Inspired, Saltaire Collection and Saltaire History Club to commemorate 20 years of Saltaire’s UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription. A selection of the best entries will be shown as part of a larger heritage exhibition, Saltaire: Foundation and Legacy, running from May 28 - June 20 in the old boardroom at Salts Mill. Cash prizes, of: 1st £100; 2nd £75; 3rd £50; People’s Choice £25, will be awarded to four winners. The theme of the competition is ‘International Saltaire. ....
