TOKYO Yellow dust was observed widely across Japan from Kyushu to Hokkaido on the morning of May 8, reducing visibility in some areas to under 10 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
The seasonal dust is also expected to hit western to northern Japan through May 9, possibly pushing down visibility to less than 5 kilometers in some regions. The JMA is calling for people to be wary of potential traffic disruptions due to the dust. ....

TOKYO Lightning storms and strong winds could strike a large area of the country from northern to western Japan between April 30 and May 1, the Japan Meteorological Agency has warned.
The agency advised of the possibility of lightning strikes, tornadoes and other wind gusts due to the effects of low-pressure systems. It said one low-pressure system accompanying a weather front was approaching Japan s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, while another low-pressure system with cold air was expected to head from the area near the Korean Peninsula toward the Sea of Japan on the evening of April 30, resulting in extremely unstable atmospheric conditions. ....

TOKYO Following reports of repeated flights by U.S. military helicopters in Japan at low altitudes illegal for Japanese aircraft, a citizens group on March 4 petitioned Japanese government ministries to act to put an end to such flights.

TOKYO More than 60% of patients found to be infected with the novel coronavirus while in psychiatric hospitals in Japan could not be transferred to other medical facilities designated for COVID-19 cases, as general hospitals apparently tend to refuse them due to the perception that they are difficult to deal with, a survey has revealed.
Some of these patients even died from COVID-19, and experts are concerned that more may end up with insufficient treatment.
The Japan Psychiatric Hospitals Association, based in Tokyo s Minato Ward, sent questionnaires to 1,192 member hospitals and received responses from 524 of them. The survey revealed that 1,012 inpatients at psychiatric hospitals tested positive for the coronavirus between March 2020 and January 2021.
