South Bend honoring 13 leaders for Black History Month


The city of South Bend the the Black History Month Committee are honoring 13 local leaders who ve made important contributions to the city s history and culture.
“It’s important to recognize our local African-American leaders, who do tremendous work to strengthen our community,” said Mayor James Mueller, in a statement. “I thank the Black History Month committee for celebrating these contributions and the impact the honorees make in South Bend.”a
Each of the awardees will be featured on a series of digital billboards and will be honored at the Black History Month Celebration, which will be held virtually at 6 p.m. Thursday. ....

With "Karibu," Cultural Council celebrates local Black artists

Karibu, the Swahili word for “welcome, come in” takes on a new meaning when applied to African-American culture, centered around Sunday meals after church and families drawn together by strong female figures, according to the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. 
And that sense of community is at the center of its new exhibition, Karibu: A Celebration of Black Artists in Palm Beach County.  
The exhibit, a collaboration between the Cultural Council and ATB Fine Art Group, headed by artists Trina Slade-Burks and her husband Anthony Burks Sr., will be on view Monday through March 13 at the council’s headquarters, 601 Lake Ave., Lake Worth Beach. ....

New View of Nature’s Oldest Light Suggest Universe Is 13.77 Billion Years Old
From an observatory high above Chile’s Atacama Desert, astronomers have taken a new look at the oldest light in the universe.
Their observations, plus a bit of cosmic geometry, suggest that the universe is 13.77 billion years old – give or take 40 million years. A Cornell researcher co-authored one of two papers about the findings, which add a fresh twist to an ongoing debate in the astrophysics community.
The new estimate, using data gathered at the National Science Foundation’s Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), matches the one provided by the standard model of the universe, as well as measurements of the same light made by the European Space Agency’s Planck satellite, which measured remnants of the Big Bang from 2009 to ’13. ....

Hopes for January reopenings dashed for northern Santa Barbara County schools


Public school districts in Santa Maria and Orcutt have had no choice but to further delay plans for returning to in-person learning once again, as Santa Barbara County s purple tier status and skyrocketing COVID-19 cases leave the future uncertain.
In response to the second COVID-19 spike and accompanying state restrictions, the Santa Maria Joint-Union High School District has revised their reopening plan created earlier in the year, eliminating the January target date for initiating the hybrid model. 
Instead, the district must wait until Santa Barbara County has been in the state s red tier for two weeks to shift into hybrid learning. Based on current COVID-19 trends, district officials have designated March 1 as the earliest possible return date. ....
