It aims to help older adults engage with digital technology and use it to reduce social isolation. The Digital Inclusion Project is open to people around Furness. It includes online sessions for elderly residents, with an online breakfast club currently running every Monday from 10:00am until midday. There are also singing and exercise sessions available too. If needed, Age UK can loan out a number of tablets to residents to help them access the internet and have a team of digital champions ready to help guide them. The organisation is also aiming to team up with fellow firms to build up a library of resources that can protect users against the likes of scamming. ....
READERS have praised a Covid-19 survivor left intensive care two months after he first arrived. Tim Dack, 49, of Market Street in Dalton, was left fighting for his life after contracting Covid-19 – but after 63 days he has finally left intensive care to the sound of applause. Mr Dack was taken to Furness General Hospital in January where he spent 39 days sedated and on a ventilator as he fought for survival. Mr Dack said he was ‘humbled’ to have been cared for by the staff in the ICU, who lined the corridors to applause him as he rang a bell to celebrate his victory when he was wheeled out of the unit last Thursday. ....

Dalton Leisure Centre receives £26,000 from the National Leisure Recovery Fund Ann Thomson Grant funding has been secured to support the reopening of a south Cumbria leisure centre once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Dalton Leisure Centre – an independent, trustee-run centre in Chapel Street, Dalton – will receive £26,000 to ensure it can continue to offer sports and leisure services to visitors as soon as it is safe to do so. The award was made from the National Leisure Recovery Fund after Barrow Borough Council submitted an application to the fund in December. âSupporting sport and leisure is very important to us as a council so news of this funding award is extremely welcome,” explained Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council. ....
COUNCILLORS said they were concerned about their own wellbeing during a debate into modern slavery. Representatives on Barrow Borough Council asked if they could be classed as potentially vulnerable themselves when carrying out their duties. The question was raised by Cllr Ann Thomson, leader of the council, during the review into safeguarding adults and modern slavery. She said: “I wonder whether the council needs a safeguarding lead for councillors as well as staff? “Can we incorporate a new policy within our own councillors groups, as I know on the planning committees we get ‘a lot of abuse’ and a lot of hassle, and I sometimes worry about the health of some of the planning members? ....
