In 1987, after arriving in Canada as an immigrant, my first home was in the Ontario town of Ajax.
Friends had suggested the sleepy suburb east of Toronto as a good place to raise my two daughters, away from the hustle and bustle of Scarborough and Mississauga, where most South Asians congregated.
Other than eggs splattered on my front door and me not knowing what to make of that gesture, the then town of 40,000 was barely mentioned in the news.
Those days are gone.
Today, Ajax finds itself embroiled in a political storm that was planted in 2007 when then-mayor Steve Parish broke with tradition and designated a new street after a Second World War sailor, but not an Allied sailor the very captain of the Nazi pocket battleship the allied sailors had hunted and forced the Germans to scuttle outside Montevideo harbour, in neutral Uruguay. ....
