Parkersburg City Council set to receive budget Tuesday | News, Sports, Jobs

PARKERSBURG City Council will receive Mayor Tom Joyce’s proposed 2021-22 budget and consider an ordinance granting a B&O tax exemption for construction in newly annexed areas and for residential construction anywhere in Parkersburg.
Joyce said the spending plan reflects areas of emphasis mentioned by council during a January workshop on priorities for the coming year and term.
“There’s certainly adequate funding for continued demolition of problem properties,” along with street rehabilitation, he said.
At the conclusion of Tuesday’s meeting, council will resolve into the Committee of the Whole for budget hearings set to begin on Monday, March 8, with council Vice President Sharon Kuhl presiding. ....

PARKERSBURG An ordinance establishing an internship program for the Parkersburg Police Department was referred to Parkersburg City Council on Tuesday by its Personnel Committee.
If approved by council at its Jan. 26 and Feb. 9 meetings, the ordinance would create four intern positions that pay $10 an hour with no benefits. Mayor Tom Joyce and Police Chief Joe Martin said the program would engage and train candidates who passed the written and agility tests for the department and completed a background check but may not be ready to go to the academy and join the department. ....

PARKERSBURG Parkersburg City Council appointed six new positions for the 2021 calendar year, naming council members Zach Stanley as council president and Sharon Kuhl as vice president, along with four other positions.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Stanley and Kuhl won in unanimous decisions, abstaining when voting for their positions occurred. Stanley was unopposed, while Kuhl faced fellow council member Mike Reynolds.
Council members also confirmed Blaine Myers as City Attorney, Debra Steed for Municipal Judge, Rickie Yeager for Development Director and Sondra Wallace for Personnel Director. ....
