Andrea Bharatt s murder awakened a trauma for many women who were victims of violent attacks. One of them, who is now married, shares her challenges today, 20 years after she was raped, with WMN writer Carol Quash.
“I always wonder what is so special about me. Why me and not Pixie Lakhan, Ashanti Riley, Shannon Banfield and all the others who have been raped and brutally murdered? Why am I alive today, and they are not?”
Dianne (not her real name) closed her eyes in an attempt to hold back the tears that were forming. But they eventually seeped out and slowly rolled down her cheeks. For even though more than two decades have passed since she was raped by someone whom she had met about a month earlier, she relives that experience almost every day, and that one question keeps popping up. ....

THE EDITOR: WPC Katina Williams has renewed my confidence in the police. Her act of gallantry in comforting murder victim Andrea Bharatt’s father is commendable. On that ill-fated day, Randolph Bharatt walked a path of uncertainty but thankfully was not alone.
The recent happenings cause us to wonder if paths we cross daily may be the unknown valley of the shadow of unlawful death, robbery, rape, despair and violence. Such ills are plaguing our land and there is great difficulty seeing them unfold.
Could you imagine how many families relive the nightmare of seeing images of their murdered beloved? It is indeed troubling. Our hearts break too. We are pained. Our hearts break for Sean Luke, Leah Lammy, Tecia Henry, Hope Arismandez, Amy Annamunthodo, Akeil Chambers, Shannon Banfield and Andrea Bharatt. Their voices were silenced. ....

Friends and family of Ashanti Dennisia Riley said their final tearful goodbyes to the brutally slain 18-year-old on Monday afternoon. Her funeral was held at Mount D’Or Seventh Day Adventist Church and her body laid to rest at the San Juan Public Cemetery.
Riley’s cousin Pastor Steve Riley delivered the sermon.
“From Sunshine Avenue to sunset, Santa Cruz,” he said. “Hers will forever be the sad but true story of a teenager who left Sunshine Avenue (and) ended up, as it were, figuratively on Sunset Boulevard. From sunshine to sunset.” ....
