HUNDREDS of women (plus male allies) on Monday marched through Port of Spain on the occasion of International Women s Day (IWD) to demand the right to walk and travel free from the fear of assault and harassment, in an event termed, Walkout for Women.
While the murders of Andrea Bharatt, 23, and Ashanti Riley, 18, ignited candlelight vigils nationwide nightly, women are still victims such as Karen Rauseo-Karim, 53, murdered last Tuesday in Princes Town, plus a 34 year old woman shot and wounded in Princes Town on Thursday.

An International Women’s Day (IWD) Walkout will take place on March 8, led by 15 women’s rights, LGBTQ+ and social justice organisations.
In the spirit of IWD’s 2021 theme #ChooseToChallenge, the collective efforts of the walkout will aim to challenge the conscience of Trinidad and Tobago’s leaders to implement measures to create a safer country for women.
The muster point will be City Gate, Port of Spain, at 2 pm. The walk will then move to Parliament and will end at 4 pm.
In a release, the organisations said the symbolic, nationwide walkout will see all kinds of people walk out from their offices, homes, or wherever else they might be, to gather at the capital’s major transport hub, City Gate. When it concludes outside the Red House, the gathering will call on the Government and Opposition for immediate action against gender-based violence.

THE EDITOR: WPC Katina Williams has renewed my confidence in the police. Her act of gallantry in comforting murder victim Andrea Bharatt’s father is commendable. On that ill-fated day, Randolph Bharatt walked a path of uncertainty but thankfully was not alone.
The recent happenings cause us to wonder if paths we cross daily may be the unknown valley of the shadow of unlawful death, robbery, rape, despair and violence. Such ills are plaguing our land and there is great difficulty seeing them unfold.
Could you imagine how many families relive the nightmare of seeing images of their murdered beloved? It is indeed troubling. Our hearts break too. We are pained. Our hearts break for Sean Luke, Leah Lammy, Tecia Henry, Hope Arismandez, Amy Annamunthodo, Akeil Chambers, Shannon Banfield and Andrea Bharatt. Their voices were silenced.
