One private hospital had 68 Covid patients waiting to get admitted on Sunday. Many of them were waiting for three days and were turned away by other private hospitals because of lack of beds. At another private hospital, more than 50 Covid patients have enlisted their names, hoping to get a call for admission. A third hospital has stopped maintaining a waiting list of Covid patients because most of them will have to wait indefinitely. Senior officials of private hospitals said they were not taking calls from even friends and relatives, fearing there would be a request for a Covid bed. The crisis of Covid beds, which had started around the beginning of this month, has become severe and relatives of patients are desperately calling up hospitals but are unable to get a bed. The situation is the same at most government hospitals too, said relatives of several patients. ....
Several private hospitals in the city on Tuesday deferred administering the second dose of Covishield because of shortage of doses, officials of the healthcare units said. The Centre has promised Bengal three lakh doses of Covishield in a couple of days and state health department officials said the booster - or second - dose would be administered after the arrival of the consignment. Hundreds of elderly people and those with comorbidities, whose second dose of Covishield is due from Tuesday, are calling up or turning up at hospitals but are being told that doses are not available. The state government has told private healthcare units that for the time being only Covaxin should be administered to those who are turning up for their first dose, while Covishield should be reserved for those who took it in their first dose and are turning up for the second. ....
Bengal has barely two days’ stock of Covid-19 vaccine doses and several centres in Calcutta had to suspend vaccination on Friday and a few others said they could not administer the jabs on Saturday because of the shortage. An official in the state health department said on Friday evening Bengal had about eight lakh vials of Covid vaccines left. On an average, three to four lakh vials are required across the state every day. “We were supposed to receive a consignment of vaccines from the Centre on Friday but it didn’t come. Officials in Delhi were unable to tell us when the next consignment would be sent. If we don’t get fresh supply by Monday or Tuesday, vaccination will come to a stop. We asked the Centre on Friday to supply vaccines on an emergency basis,” the official said. ....
