Amidst the outbreak of the second wave of coronavirus, Kolkata faces a shortage of covid beds.

Kolkata: Amidst the outbreak of the second wave of coronavirus, Kolkata faces a shortage of covid beds. Kolkata recorded 937 cases in the past 24 hours, with the number of positive patients going up, the covid beds are falling short.
“All are requested to bring to our notice if there is any refusal of admission due to non-vacancy in any CE (clinical establishment) so that the matter may be taken to resolve and redirect where admission can take place,” said the health commission addressing people as per The Telegraph. ....

Bengal government asks private hospitals to add beds or open satellite units

The Bengal government on Monday asked private hospitals to increase the Covid bed count or reopen satellite centres they had been running last year for Covid patients, the request triggered by an alarming rise in the number of people testing positive for the coronavirus.
Several private hospitals said they had closed the satellite units following a sharp drop in the number of Covid patients towards the end of last year, a trend that persisted for several more weeks before cases started rising again early March.
“Private hospitals have been told to increase the number of beds. At the same time they should explore the possibility of reopening satellite facilities as the number of cases is rising sharply in and around Calcutta,” an official of the state health department said after a meeting between the department and private hospitals on Monday. ....

Coronavirus outbreak: Vaccine rush on weekend

Several private hospitals were filled with vaccine recipients in the 45 years to 59 years category on Saturday, most of them using the holiday to get themselves vaccinated. Hospitals expect a rush on Sunday too.
Officials in the hospitals said they witnessed a sharp spike in the total vaccination numbers compared to the last few days, primarily because of a large number of office-goers taking the jab on Saturday.
Peerless Hospital vaccinated 391 people on Saturday, with 223 of them in the 45 to 59 group.
Belle Vue Clinic vaccinated 380 people, 190 of who were below 60. AMRI Hospitals vaccinated 900 people, with nearly 630 of them in the below 60 group. ....

Rise in cases prompts Kolkata hospitals to add Covid beds

Several private hospitals in the city have increased their Covid bed count because of a steady rise in the number of cases and an increasing percentage of people testing positive are being hospitalised.
All these hospitals had reduced the number of Covid beds in December and January following a significant dip in the number of cases. But over the past week they have been converting non-Covid beds into Covid ones.
Several other hospitals are considering doing the same because the existing Covid beds are filling up fast.
Between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, 13 people who tested positive for Covid-19 got admitted to AMRI Hospitals Dhakuria. An official of the hospital said they had around 90 beds in the middle of 2020, when the epidemic was at its peak. ....

Kolkata: A Kolkata hospital has decided to settle the bill of a Covid victim through the government’s Swasthya Sathi, at a time when patients have been alleging of private hospitals denying entertaining the scheme.
The relief to the victim’s family came after it approached the West Bengal Health Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission. The patient, Pranab Kumar Banik (64) was admitted to RTIICS on January 10. The Shakuntala Park resident succumbed on January 29. ....
