Outrage, grief and calls for change took the nation by storm after the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a Black man with Texas roots who died while under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. On May 29, a Friday evening, a couple dozen people held signs at the southwest corner of Texas Avenue and George Bush Drive in College Station; the following day, a gathering of about 250 held signs and chanted âBlack lives matterâ and âSay his name! George Floyd.â On the evening of May 31, several hundred people lined Texas Avenue for more than three hours; one week later, more than 1,000 people filled several blocks of sidewalk and grass in the same location as cars drove through, honking their support. The summer of 2020 also included a unity prayer event led by clergy, a forum featuring law enforcement leaders, and multiple protests on the Texas A&M campus. ....
Brazos County Sheriff-elect Wayne Dicky announced this week his decision to appoint Paul Martinez to serve as his chief deputy for enforcement. Martinez, who has worked in the sheriffâs office for 27 years, was named interim chief deputy sheriff earlier this month following the retirement of Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Stewart and will officially take on the role full-time when Dicky takes office Jan. 1. âTo serve in the chief deputy position is an honor, and to continue to serve with the folks Iâve worked with throughout the years â and to serve the community I was born and raised in â to be able to do that really means a lot to me,â Martinez told The Eagle on Tuesday afternoon. âIt feels great that they have the confidence in me to step into the role of acting chief deputy, soon to be full-time chief deputy â and the fact that my years of service here with the agency have paid off.â ....

Itâs why heâs historically insisted his deputies wear white or cream-colored cowboy hats. Kirk will hang up his own hat at the end of the year as he retires from his longtime position. As he reflected back on his life in Brazos County, he said he hopes that the little traditions he leaves behind will carry on, along with the heart and compassionate character he has tried to instill in his departmentâs operations. ....
