Belpre City Council held its regular meeting Monday evening. Due to COVID-19 cases, the Belpre City Building has been closed since November, with all business conducted by mail, phone and electronically or by appointment. Monday’s meeting was held by Zoom, with most council members meeting in-person in the Belpre Council Chamber and the public attending virtually. Luke Sulfridge, with the Southeast Ohio Public Energy Council, said the electric aggregation agreement approved by council in October 2020 will see its price reset as scheduled on June 1. There will be a slight increase in the cost due to market pressures, from 4.867 cents per kilowatt hour to 5.64 cents. ....

[email protected] BELPRE Two contested races were featured on Tuesday’s primary ballot in Belpre, along with a single-ward vote which approved alcohol sales at a proposed restaurant. Two people were running for Belpre Council President, both incumbent Republicans. Based on Tuesday’s unofficial results with all precincts reporting, Larry Martin defeated Donna Miller for the council president seat in a vote of 270-218. Martin, who previously served on council representing the First Ward, was appointed to his current seat in 2019. He had just been elected to an At-Large seat on council and was then appointed to fill the council president vacancy. ....
[email protected] BELPRE A new officer has joined the Belpre Police Department and was presented to Belpre City Council on Monday evening. Council held its regular meeting Monday evening. Due to COVID-19 cases, the Belpre City Building has been closed since Nov. 18, with all business conducted by mail, phone and electronically or by appointment. Monday’s meeting was held by Zoom, with most council members meeting in-person in the Belpre Council Chamber and the public attending virtually. Mayor Mike Lorentz introduced council to the Belpre Police Department’s newest officer, John Bailey Welch. Lorentz said Welch is a Little Hocking native now living in Cutler who completed his police training earlier this year. The Belpre position will be his first as a law enforcement officer. ....
[email protected] BELPRE At its next meeting in March, Belpre City Council hopes to review a new economic development plan for Belpre and see what steps can be taken moving forward. Belpre City Council held its regular meeting Monday evening. Due to the spike in COVID-19 cases, the Belpre City Building has been closed since Nov. 18, with all business conducted by mail, phone and electronically or by appointment. Monday’s meeting was held by Zoom. In his report, Mayor Michael Lorentz said he was present Feb. 25 when Jesse Roush, executive director with the Southeast Ohio Port Authority, presented the Burton Economic Development Plan which was developed in 2020 for the city of Belpre. The plan had been scheduled for presentation to city officials during the year but COVID-19 caused delays. ....
