Mon, 03/15/2021 LAWRENCE Four University of Kansas students who have been actively involved in undergraduate research during their university careers are competing for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, regarded as the premier undergraduate award to encourage excellence in science, engineering and mathematics. The students’ applications are coordinated by the Office of Fellowships in Undergraduate Studies. KU’s nominees: Emma Cosner, a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in physics Mary Sevart, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering Jonah Stiel, a junior majoring in chemistry. Sixty-eight KU students have received Goldwater scholarships since they first were awarded in 1989. Congress established the program in 1986 in tribute to the retired U.S. senator from Arizona and to ensure a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers. ....
Print The Murchie Science Building Expansion ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this Thursday, adding 61,000 sq. ft. of collaborative spaces, flexible classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, and student-centered design to a campus building that originally opened its doors in 1988. The spaces and resources inside the MSB Expansion will revolutionize the STEM experience for all students at the University of Michigan-Flint. Thanks to UM-Flint s general education program, students studying in all disciplines take coursework in the natural sciences and technology, allowing the entire campus community to take advantage of this vibrant building. For students majoring in a STEM field, this new building is sure to quickly become a campus home, equally equipped for both intense studying and relaxing between classes. ....
Despite the challenges posed by the worldwide pandemic, Southern Arkansas University continues to engage its service area with holiday traditions aimed at reaching the neediest in the community. The Angel Tree is an SAU Housing department program meeting the needs of the underprivileged in Columbia County. This year, Angel Tree applications have moved online, with several families yet to be adopted. In light of COVID, there is no physical Angel Christmas Tree this year. All interactions with adopted families will be contact-free. Angel Tree makes Christmas great for children in Columbia County. Gifts are due by 5 p.m. today. While no specific amount is required to be spent on each child, $50-$75 is suggested per child. ....
SAU Continues Holiday Traditions For Helping Community Needs Despite the challenges posed by the worldwide pandemic, Southern Arkansas University continues to engage its service area with holiday traditions aimed at reaching the neediest in our community. According to a press release, for the 20th year, the Annual Residence Hall Association Turkey Dinner provided a traditional Thanksgiving meal, including turkey and all the trimmings. SAU Housing partners each year with the Stew Pot, which is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Magnolia, to host the event. This year, about 350 Columbia County residents picked up meals. Sandra Martin, director of SAU Housing, said the event observed all COVID-19 safety protocols. ....
