The low number of cases came up during Monday’s Board of Education meeting, when Superintendent Thomas Scarice and supervisor of health services Suzanne Levasseur proposed that there be no health update at the final board meeting of the season, which takes place June 14. “As our school and town cases of COVID-19 are so low and it is the end of the school year, we will likely not need to continue with a health update at BOE meetings during the summer months,” Levasseur said in an email. “As we prepare to reopen in the fall, we will look at current trends and certainly continue this if needed to keep ....

The State has also expanded the eligibility criteria for the 1b category, although those in the expanded category will not be able to register on Monday. Many Westporters have already begun registering themselves into the Department of Public Health’s Vaccine Administration Management System (VAMS). Some have done so easily and await the ability to schedule their appointment. Others struggle with the technology and the registration requirements. Written by Jowdy Kane Funeral Home Dr. Jack G. Shiller, a longtime Westport resident, died in his home in Redding, CT on January 13, 2021. He was 92. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1928, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1947 and from the Columbia Medical School in 1952. After training at Bellevue Hospital and The Babies Hospital in New York City, he was board certified in pediatrics and served in his profession for several decades. He established his own private practice in Westport before forming Willows Pediatric Group in 1973 with Dr. Albert Beasley. He was active on the staff of Norwalk Hospital, where he started the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and later served as Interim Chief of Pediatrics. He continued academic ties to Babies Hospital as teaching staff and served as director of Public Health for the Westport Weston Health District. ....
New COVID-19 protocols such as seating charts and close proximity contact tracing have been established since the return to hybrid model as of Nov. 30. After an evaluation of the COVID protocols at Staples, the Westport/Weston Health district and medical advisor Dr. Norman Weinberger, the policy for contact tracing has been modified to only quarantine students in close proximity to positive cases. To have an accurate model of which students are close to one another, teachers are making seating charts that can be used if a student were to contract COVID-19. “We intend to take a more precise approach when determining ‘close contacts’ and recommending a self-quarantine,” Superintendent Thomas Scarice wrote in an email sent out on Nov. 25. ....
