RUSSELL Eighteen-year-old Zackary Cernak stumbled literally stubbed his toe on a mystery wedged under a rock on a hillside overlooking the Westfield River valley.
A senior about to graduate from Westfield Technical Academy, Cernak was working on his network of dirt bike trails, raking leaves and scraping debris away from a giant rock when he spotted something that looked too round, too unnatural, for its surroundings.
“Something seemed a little bit off,” said Cernak.
What he found is an iron ball, corroded and cracked with flakes of metal peeling from it, weighing in at a little more than 8 pounds and just more than 4 inches in diameter. Cradled in his hands, it looks like a rust-colored candlepin bowling ball. ....

WEST SPRINGFIELD CSX has not responded to complaints about freight trains blocking the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, but local drivers have had plenty to say.
The state’s Department of Public Utilities is investigating an alleged violation of state law when a CSX train was parked across the Front Street railroad crossing in West Springfield for more than 38 minutes on Feb. 17. State law prescribes a $500 fine for railroads blocking public streets for longer than five minutes.
At a public forum last month and in written testimonies, more than 100 residents of Agawam and West Springfield said trains parked across Front Street in West Springfield are a nuisance for residents of the Mittineague and North Agawam neighborhoods, a burden for delivery-based businesses in the two towns, and even a threat to public safety. ....
