According to my research, of the
14,449 home runs that the Cubs hit have hit since 1876, first year of the National League, exactly
317 were hit by pitchers.
That number is
17 fewer than the team s 334 grand slams during the same 145 seasons.
.
5 games in which a Cubs pitcher homered twice, the last of them in 1971.
But by going through the website s individual Home Run Logs for every Cubs pitcher, I identified
3 more times that it happened, all before the Modern Era began in 1901.
Following, in chronological order, is a look at each of the pitchers who hit 2 home runs in a game. ....

With the National League adopting the designated hitter for 2020, Cubs pitchers hit no home runs.
They had hit at least 1 in each of the previous 19 seasons, the second-longest such streak in team history, surpassed only by 25 straight seasons, 1918-42.
.
The first pitcher to hit a homer for the Cubs was Larry Corcoran, on June 20, 1882. The right hander was 22 years old, in his third season with the team then known as the White Stockings, when he hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the ninth inning of a 13-3 victory over the Worcester Ruby Legs. ....

Many baseball books and websites show that the Cubs played under 4 names. Baseball-reference.com, for example, lists:
1876-1889: White Stockings
1903-2020: Cubs
But as shown in previous posts in this series, newspapers referred to the team by multiple other names.
Nor was there an immediate shift from one name to another. In 1902, as described yesterday, the Chicago Tribune printed the last name of the team s new manager, Selee, and Orphans on the same page just 3 times.
Selee and Remnants, a name that first had appeared in 1901, were printed together 33 times. ....

From 1898 through the early years of the 20th Century, the team customarily was called the Orphans.
But at various times the Chicago Tribune featured several alternative names, none of which gained public favor.
...
The Tribune actually introduced this name before the first appearance of Orphans.
The team began the 1898 on the road, winning 5 of 8 games, with 2 more rained out.
On April 29, the Tribune published this:
Threatening skies and dull, dripping rain lasted long enough yesterday morning to scare the managers of the Chicago club into postponing the opening game of the local season until this afternoon. . . . ....

Over the years, picking a name for a new professional sports team has become a complicated process, often involving consultants, focus groups and contests in which fans are invited to submit proposed names.
Teams frequently want a name that is striking, if not downright bizarre. Case in point: the Seattle Kraken, who will begin play in the National Hockey League in 2021-22.
Two of my all-time favorite names belonged to minor league hockey teams: the Toledo Goaldiggers and the Macon Whoopees.
Minor league baseball has had the likes of the Albuquerque Isotopes, El Paso Chihuahuas, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Lansing Lugnuts, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, New Orleans Baby Cakes, Pensacola Blue Wahoos and Richmond Flying Squirrels. ....
