Officials still investigating reason for fire at Union County’s Playworld

LEWISBURG All employees were evacuated safely from Playworld after the playground equipment manufacturer’s plant in Buffalo Township, Union County, caught fire Tuesday.
A cause and point of origin weren’t immediately available. Trooper Jim Nizinski, state police fire marshal, was investigating. Information broadcast by the 911 center indicated a commercial oven caught fire.
Central Susquehanna Regional 911 dispatched fire crews at 11:51 a.m. to the plant at 1000 Buffalo Road, Route 192. The incident was first reported by the building’s automatic fire alarm and confirmed one minute later when someone inside the facility reported an active fire, according to Assistant Chief J.R. Youngof William Cameron Engine Company. ....

WILLIAMSPORT – A municipal zoning board in North Central Pennsylvania counters it did not violate federal law in denying Verizon the opportunity to build a cell phone communications tower, rather that the company did not meet the proper burden of proof for obtaining a necessary variance for the construction.
Cellco Partnership (doing business as “Verizon Wireless”) of Basking Ridge, N.J. first filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on Dec. 28 versus the White Deer Township Zoning Hearing Board, of New Columbia.
Verizon asserted it was given authorization by the Federal Communications Commission to operate a wireless communications system in Union Township and that in the White Deer Township area, there is currently a lack of strong signal strength and cellular service. ....

Positive COVID-19 Cases Increasing in Pennsylvania
(Harrisburg, PA)   Positive COVID-19 cases are continuing to rise in Pennsylvania. The state s Department of Health reported over four-thousand new positive cases yesterday. The total number of cases has now surpassed 876,000 since the beginning of the pandemic. There were also 149 deaths reported yesterday linked to complications of the coronavirus.
Governor Wolf Calls for Minimum Wage Increase
(Harrisburg, PA)   Governor Tom Wolf is showing his support to increase Pennsylvania s minimum wage. Governor Wolf announced yesterday that he is calling for the state to increase the minimum wage to 12-dollars per hour starting this July. Wolf s proposed plan would add fifty-cent increases to the minimum wage rate every year until 2027 when it reaches 15-dollars per hour. He also proposed an income tax cut that would affect almost three-million citizens in the state. ....

Body found on I-80 identified; homicide investigation underway

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Milton, the body of 47-year-old Rebecca Landrith was discovered on I-80 eastbound at the mile marker 199 off-ramp in White Deer Township, Union County, which is about 30 miles west of Bloomsburg.
Landrith was a Virginia resident with ties to several states that include South Dakota and Utah, police say.
According to Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers, investigators believe Landrith had traveled through Indiana and Wisconsin between Thursday and Saturday.
She was found Sunday by a PennDOT worker who was on duty due to Sunday’s snow. ....
