NEW DELHI: Delhi’s air quality improved by approximately 15% between 2019 and 2020 but it still ranked as the 10th most polluted city in the world and the most polluted capital, according to the World Air Quality Report, 2020, released by the Swiss air technology company, IQAir.
In 2020, all Indian cities that were monitored observed air quality improvements compared to 2018 while 63% saw improvements over 2019. However, India continues to feature prominently at the top of the most polluted cities ranking, with 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities globally.
Delhi, with an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 84.1 micrograms per cubic metre, topped the list of the most polluted capital cities. It was followed by Dhaka ( Bangladesh) with annual average PM2.5 concentration at 77.1. ....

Report: South Asia Dominates Top 20 of World's Most Polluted Cities

A study released by Swiss air-quality watchdog group IQAir on Tuesday found New Delhi, India, was the world’s most polluted capital city for the third year running, and South Asia overall had some of the worst air quality ever recorded.
Reuters dourly noted New Delhi’s particulate matter concentrations were “more than double the level of Beijing,” which is currently the 14th most polluted city on Earth. India’s pollution declined by 11 percent due to the coronavirus lockdowns, but it was still the third most-polluted country, right behind Bangladesh and Pakistan.
“Air pollution caused an estimated 54,000 premature deaths in New Delhi in 2020, according to a recent study by Greenpeace Southeast Asia Analysis and IQAir,” Reuters added. ....

Despite widespread air quality improvements during 2019 and 2020, air pollution continues to be dangerously high, the annual data ‘World Air Quality Report, 2020’ compiled by IQAir has revealed.
According to a press release, south Indian cities recorded relatively better air quality, though they remained above the daily WHO limit of 25 µg/m3 for most parts of 2020. ....
