Six-month blanket loan moratorium may not fuel market rally this time around

KUALA LUMPUR (July 6): Last year s stock market rally was unexpected against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ample liquidity as a result of low interest rates globally was the main fuel to the sharp rebound.
In Malaysia, loan moratorium granted by Bank Negara Malaysia added additional fuel. More interestingly, the long absent retail investors returned to dominate the local market.
Retail investors are given a six-month loan moratorium again, however research analysts and fund managers doubt that it would help stage another rally like last year. The reason is that more people are likely to face even tighter cash flow compared with a year ago, no thanks to coronavirus. ....

Latest round of quarterly results shows corporate earnings recovery momentum remains intact

Latest round of quarterly results shows corporate earnings recovery momentum remains intact
01 Mar 2021 / 09:30 H.
PETALING JAYA: Analysts have opined that the latest batch of quarterly corporate earnings are commendable despite rising Covid-19 infections that led to a reimposition of movement restrictions, which were mitigated by a strong performance on the trade front.
JF Apex head of research Lee Chung Cheng views the latest round of corporate results as above market expectations.
“There had been some signs of recovery in third quarter earnings, and fourth quarter earnings demonstrated that the recovery momentum is moving forward,” he told
SunBiz.
Nonetheless, Lee noted that there were not many surprises for the quarter, as the strong performance of certain sectors such as gloves and technology were within his expectations. ....

Selling in glove heavyweights drags Bursa lower for second straight day
23 Feb 2021 / 19:01 H.
KUALA
LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia reversed earlier gains to finish at the day’s low for a second consecutive day as the key index was weighed down by persistent selling in rubber glove heavyweights amid recovery plays following the arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine.
At 5 pm, the benchmark FBM KLCI declined 5.41 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 1,565.05 from 1,570.46 at Monday’s close.
The key index opened 3.21 points firmer at 1,573.67 and moved between 1,565.05 and 1,580.68 throughout the day.
However, market breadth remained positive with gainers marginally leading losers by 603 to 602, while 450 counters were unchanged, 542 untraded and nine others suspended. ....

Suppressed valuations now unfavourable for glove listings

AT the height of the glove stocks rally late last year, two local glove companies expressed interest in an initial public offering.
But as valuations for glove stocks have tapered off, now that many countries have started to vaccinate their citizens against the Covid-19 virus, have the duo missed the boat?
Harps Holdings Sdn Bhd and Smart Glove Corp were reportedly seeking to raise about RM2 billion and RM1 billion respectively in an IPO. However, they have yet to file their prospectus exposure draft with the Securities Commission Malaysia.
Analysts generally view a listing as a good platform for private companies to raise funds for their expansion plans. ....

KLCI flat, tech up the most in Covid-19-driven markets

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 14): The FBM KLCI closed down 0.98 points or 0.06% at 1,635.71 today while Bursa Malaysia’s Technology Index rose over 3% to become the top percentage gainer among bourse gauges as investors weighed the economic impact of the nation’s reenforced Covid-19-driven Movement Control Order (MCO) across several states and federal territories.
Analysts said the MCO is expected to hurt Malaysia s economic and corporate earnings growth although such restricted-movement policy is also seen as a boon for Bursa-listed technology companies such as semiconductor manufacturers due to anticipation of higher demand for computer-related products.
“I think corporate earnings recovery and economic recovery will be slower over the next one to two quarters,” Inter-Pacific Securities Sdn Bhd head of research Victor Wan told ....
