Politics weighs on market outlook

PETALING JAYA: Incessant political squabbles are raising the Malaysian stock market’s risk premium and experts say the continuation of such noises will weigh down any upside in the market.
With Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin insisting yesterday that he will not resign unless his fate is tested in a no-confidence vote to be tabled in September, this means political uncertainties will prolong for at least another month.
The announcement by the Prime Minister came at a time when market sentiment was already suffering from the threat of high Covid-19 cases, the extremely long movement restriction period and weak economic conditions. ....

Six-month blanket loan moratorium may not fuel market rally this time around

KUALA LUMPUR (July 6): Last year s stock market rally was unexpected against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ample liquidity as a result of low interest rates globally was the main fuel to the sharp rebound.
In Malaysia, loan moratorium granted by Bank Negara Malaysia added additional fuel. More interestingly, the long absent retail investors returned to dominate the local market.
Retail investors are given a six-month loan moratorium again, however research analysts and fund managers doubt that it would help stage another rally like last year. The reason is that more people are likely to face even tighter cash flow compared with a year ago, no thanks to coronavirus. ....

Pemulih aid package timely

Dr Yeah Kim Leng, professor of economics at Sunway University, said the new aid package is broad-based and covers more sectors for aid support. “The aid is timely given that the lockdown is extended with an uncertain transition to the next stage of the NRP, ” he said.
PETALING JAYA: The Pakej Perlindungan Rakyat dan Pemulihan Ekonomi (Pemulih) aid package worth RM150bil is seen as timely by economists and fund managers in view of the country still in phase one of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).
Among the highlights of the Pemulih aid package are the continuation of the Wage Subsidy Scheme for the fourth time with an allocation of RM3.8bil, which is expected to benefit more than 2.5 million workers, as well as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) introducing a new withdrawal facility called i-Citra, where a total of 12.6 million EPF members can make withdrawals of up to RM5, 000 with a fixed payment rate of RM1, 000 per month for five months. ....
