After 18 years of law enforcement in Kirby, including the past 11 as its leader, Police Chief Kevin Bois has served his final days in the city before retirement.
Bois, who joked that he was the world’s oldest rookie patrolman at age 33, served two stints in Kirby, first as a patrolman from 1995-2003 and then as interim-then-eventual chief starting in 2009 until his final day on the job last month.
“Last April, I sat down with (city manager) Monique (Vernon) and said ‘Look, we’re thinking about retiring,” Bois said on Feb. 23, the eve of his Feb. 24 retirement. “I’ve been in service to the public in one form or another for nearly 40 years now. It has nothing to do with politics or ongoing discussion in Kirby … it’s just time.” ....

Vernon Jordan came from humble beginnings and grew up in a segregated America, yet he moved through the world in the manner of someone who owned it. He was a Black man who knew what it meant to be called the n-word, not in a burst of anger but with cruel nonchalance. He knew what it meant to be underestimated.
In response to these indignities, he used his physical presence - his formidable height, his confident bearing, his politicized skin tone and his pitch-perfect style - to rise above those who would insult his humanity. ....
