Hospitals are seeing a worrying increase in patients with COVID-19. Lee Health has seen the number nearly triple in recent weeks, and they blame the delta variant for the rise.
One study finds the risk of ending up in the hospital is about double for people infected with the variant, but even if you stay out of the hospital – and even if you’re fully vaccinated – there’s still some risk.
“We were down to about 27 to 30 a day. Now, we’re seeing somewhere between 65 and 70 to 75 a day. So almost triple what we were seeing before,” said Dr. Stephanie Stovall, interim chief quality and safety officer with Lee Health.

There’s some hope for those living life hooked up to a machine.
A new treatment is in the works for lupus, a disease in which a person’s own immune system attacks their organs and soft tissues.
For her first Valentine’s Day with her new husband, Gabrielle Davis wanted everything to be perfect, but “I was in pain. I was experiencing achiness and joint pain,” she said.
“I told him to take me to the hospital because there was no way I was going to be able to have dinner or celebrate with him that night.”

Rita Bertler’s first breast tumor appeared in 1999.
Having witnessed her mother battle breast cancer, she knew what was at stake.
“My mother was a breast cancer victim. She had to have a mastectomy,” said Bertler, president and founder of Dollars for Mammograms. “I was scared to death.”
But her fear wasn’t only for her physical health.
“When I had my first breast tumor, I was uninsured,” Bertler said. “I went into a financial arrangement with every one of my providers. You have the anesthesiologist; you have the radiologist; you’ve got the surgeon.”
