MUMBAI: Newborns infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have a higher risk of adverse outcomes and death, a study by city-based doctors and scientists has found. The risk of sepsis was 4.09-fold higher and the need for a ventilator rose 3.67 times in infected neonates compared to babies who did not have Covid-19.
The findings are from a retrospective analysis of 524 babies born to Covid-positive mothers at BYL Nair Hospital between April 14 and July 31 last year. About 6.3% (33) of the 524 neonates were found positive for SARS-CoV-2 by the RT-PCR test. The clinical outcomes of the 33 babies were compared with 490 uninfected ones by experts from Nair and the ICMR-National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health in Parel. The study is one of the first to document how Covid impacts newborns. “The infected neonates are at a higher chance of developing complications and require intense management ....

COVID vaccines: time to confront anti-vax aggression

COVID vaccines: time to confront anti-vax aggression
Posted on
Nearly one billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been delivered in less than six months, but anti-vaccine disinformation and targeted attacks on scientists are undermining progress. These threats must be confronted directly, and the authority and expertise of the health community alone aren’t enough to do this.
Efforts must expand into the realm of cyber security, law enforcement, public education and international relations. A high-level inter-agency task force reporting to the UN secretary-general could assess the full impact of anti-vaccine aggression, and propose tough, balanced measures. The task force should include experts who have tackled complex global threats such as terrorism, cyber attacks and nuclear armament, because anti-science is now approaching similar levels of peril. It is becoming increasingly clear that advancing immunization requires a counteroffensive. ....

It might be time to ease off listening to some of the doctors and scientists making a name for themselves during the coronavirus pandemic. There is a really good example in the news this weekend. Dr. Peter Hotez in Houston, a darling of local and national news outlets, has some hot takes when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines and vaccine skepticism.
Dr. Hotez has an impressive resume which includes being “founding dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he is also Director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and Texas Children’s Hospital Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics, and University Professor of Biology at Baylor University.” He and his team have developed a COVID-19 vaccine that is set to be manufactured in India. So, he is frequently a guest on cable news shows to deliver his comments about the ....

Monday is not typically associated with dining out, but Monday, March 1 will be the exception. Diners can celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of the city s best restaurants, indulge at a dessert pop-up, and feast on a sandwich celebrating one of Houston s COVID-19 heroes.
For restaurant workers, many of whom have the day off, can enjoy a free lunch at one of the city s most well-regarded barbecue joints. Here s a quick rundown of all the happenings in roughly chronological order.  ....
