Megan Palko Grudzinski (NUR ’18, ’21), RN, served in the U.S. Army as a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist in both domestic and overseas emergencies from 2001 to 2013. She graduated in January with a Master of Science in Nursing and works as a psychiatric nurse practitioner at a private practice in the Cleveland area. Above, Grudzinski holds a Bible her grandfather, Joseph Palko, carried during World War II and that she kept in a pocket over her heart during her service. ....

UH authors 'design for value' to improve patient and physician experience for referrals


CLEVELAND A new paper in the June issue of
New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery describes how the University Hospitals (UH) system applied design-based thinking in a re-imagined process for referrals of patients from primary care physicians to psychiatrists in a value-based, high-reliability model.
Referrals from primary care to specialty care represent a critical pathway in the patient journey to wellness. As we move toward value-based payment models, high-reliability referral pathways will be of increasing importance in achieving better outcomes at lower cost, said Patrick Runnels, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Population Health and Behavioral Health at UH, Vice Chair of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and lead author of the paper. ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio Combining extensive social distancing with mask wearing and routine testing could be 96% effective when combating coronavirus spread on college campuses, according to a new study.
Researchers from Case Western Reserve University, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital ran computer simulations for transmission over the course of a semester under various coronavirus prevention measures and measured effectiveness and how much each would cost. ....
