Two fires were reportedly started by heaters on Monday, according to a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue official, including this one in the Forest Glen area of Silver Spring.

Two fires on Monday were caused by heaters in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg, according to a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue official.
One fire displaced a family and multiple animals, including a snake, in the Forest Glen area of Silver Spring on Monday.
Pete Piringer, a Fire & Rescue spokesman, posted on Twitter that firefighters were called to the 2800 block of Woodstock Avenue around 6:40 a.m. on Monday due to a fire in the basement. ....

One Dead After Crash in Putnam

The two-vehicle crash happened around 10:20 p.m. on Woodstock Avenue West.
One of the drivers was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries and was transported to Day Kimball Hospital, where he died, police said.

City prepares for new management


The new year will bring changes to City Hall with the departure of three department heads.
City Assessor Barry Keefe, who held the position for more than 20 years, is not running for re-election. Public Works Commissioner Jeffrey Wennberg hasn’t been in his job nearly that long, but his résumé includes multiple terms as mayor and time running everything from the Rutland County Solid Waste District to the Department of Environmental Conservation. Wennberg is set to retire at the end of the week.

Vermont Business Magazine When the Vermont Legislature turned to the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board to manage $34.25 million in CARES Act funding appropriated in June and July, it came with a very short timeline: all the money had to be spent by the end of December. The federal funds, from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, were targeted to secure and rehabilitate permanent housing for homeless households and to make improvements to shelters in communities around the state.
Due to the layout of congregate housing, homeless shelters had been unable to follow the health and safety protocols for COVID-19 established by the Centers for Disease Control. Since March, most shelters had closed and more than 2,000 individuals were reported homeless; many were being housed in motels around the state. ....
